With the Covid-19 pandemic forcing us into our homes for online school, online work, and more screen time on our phones, tablets, and more, it is more important now than ever to ensure that our children are taking advantage of the screens in everyday life to learn! Here at Ignite Learning Academy, we’re here to help your child achieve just that.
Will My Child Have Too Much Screen Time at an Online School?
Do online schools lead to more screen time? The short answer is yes. But the key to preventing your child from spending too much time on their screens is to work to ensure that screen time limits and online school assignments are not a punishment for your child, but an opportunity to enhance their quality education while on a screen.
Online schools allow your child to earn a quality education that is fit for their specific needs, but it is crucial to your child’s education that screen time for school and leisure is balanced in a way that will work for you and your family’s needs. We’ve compiled a list of things to consider when discussing screen time with your child that we believe will help your child grow and learn!
1. Set Screen Time Limits
Setting time limits for certain apps or devices is one of the most effective ways to reduce screen time. Whether your screen time limits consist of limits for TV shows, Tiktok, or video games, it will be very beneficial for your child and allow their minds to strengthen their ability to focus and enhance their communications, while also preventing distractions throughout the day.
When setting screen time limits for your child, be sure to talk with them first so you can both prioritize their educational needs and not take too much away from them. We want your child to have a healthy relationship with school and social life, and sometimes setting screen time limits is a great way to achieve this.
2. Take Breaks
Allowing your child to have breaks in between assignments or any necessary time throughout the time spent with online school is a perfect way to make sure your child isn’t too burnt out on screens. When deciding when to allow your child to take a break from school, think about things such as setting aside an appropriate amount of time for lunch or a short outdoor time break.
Taking a break from online school is very beneficial to your child, and it doesn't matter if it's a fifteen-minute break, a lunch break, or even a five-minute stretch break; allowing your child a break has been shown to increase their ability to focus, reduce stress, boost their energy, and more!
3. Make Your Child Comfortable
Many people are aware of the fact that too much screen time can have a negative impact on everyone. Screen time has even been known to cause headaches, eye strain, depression, and even more. That’s why it is important to make sure your child is both physically and mentally comfortable when attending an online school.
Part of making sure that your child is comfortable is talking with them and working together to create a positive space that will encourage learning. Part of this positive space is a parent or guardian who will listen to them if they voice any concerns such as headaches, trouble seeing, eye strain, or any other issues that might be making your child uncomfortable.
